customs issue resolved

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2011.02.03

I had an odd message from our moving company today.

Apparently Canada Customs has reversed themselves on our move back to Canada. Quite abruptly, they have released the goods without requiring that:

1. we dig up further documentary evidence of having lived in Japan

2. we return with the documentation I tried to provide on Tuesday

3. we even fill in the forms they gave us (e.g. inventory)

So .. was there a process that we'd failed to comply with, or was it all just decided on the spot by that inspector? I'm very frustrated and disappointed in this embarrassing and enraging introduction to the country for my wife.

Now I know how she may have felt when Japanese border officials abruptly denied me entry to the country back in '06. Phew!

Meanwhile, it looks like we the people have won two battles.

Over the long term the only alternative to Risk Management is Crisis Management. Crisis Management is much more embarrassing, expensive, and time consuming.
