gliding on his balance bike

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2011.08.29

We have a "balance bike" for Kenny. We took it with us when we went on trip around Ontario, and he rode it a few times (Killarney, Manitoulin, the cottage). Tonight, though, he made the big breakthrough - he's learned to glide. Rather than simply walking while astride the bike, he now confidently makes long sweeping steps that carry him a few metres or more. When he's got a gentle slope at his back, he essentially glides without interruption. Happily, the wrist, knee, and elbow guards are there when he falls. This helps him act with confidence, I believe.

It's amazing to me that a three year old can learn to balance a bike so readily.

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.
