cold day for death
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
On my way down to St. Catharines today I decided to take a scenic route and take some photos.
I got off the highway in Burlington to take the old lift bridge across the Burlington canal. The bridge is an interesting old piece of steel and it's got the canal plus a couple of lighthouses. What I couldn't have guessed was that I'd get to see an actual ship pass through. But sure enough, the lights went red as I approached, and the deck started its climb.
So I hopped out to take smoe pics. After burning through the remains of a roll of film, I decided that it was too cold to change film with my bare hands and that in any event I had to get back to the car because I was parked on the road and would be blocking everyone when the bridge's deck came back down.
Turning to go I noticed an ambulance underneath the more modern bridges that fly high above the height of any ship. The so-called "skyway" now carries 99.9% of the traffic crossing the canal. Along with the ambulance were several police cars. Looking up from the odd position I spotted some more emergency-response vehicles on the skyway itself. I guess that someone either jumped or was thrown off the bridge. Pure speculation, of course, but I don't see what else it could be.
A hell of way for a cold Saturday morning in November to start!
