five years in Tokyo

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2010.07.18

Today marks the fifth anniversary of my original arrival in Tokyo.

It's not yet that long since I actually moved here—that date is in March—but it was this long weekend, at the outset of the hot Summer's hot weather, when I first arrived for what was supposed to be a six week job.

Five years already, where did it go?? I guess I know the answer—Kenny is almost exactly half that age.

I don't know what's coming of course, and where five years time might find me. But hopefully I've already laid the foundation for that.

rand()m quote

The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
