yelling at crows

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2010.05.28

Over the past few days I've had problems with a crow. It's been diving at me and even has hopped onto the stairs' railing to scream abuse at me.

Naturally, I've been screaming back.

The thing lives in the tree in front of our apartment, and though it's always been loud and aggressive (it's a crow), it's never been like this. I figured that something's made it more territorial of late but it wasn't until a smaller, sleeker crow joined in the fun this morning that it finally dawned on me. It must have found a mate, built a nest and now there are eggs.

A quick check in the tree, and yes there's a tangle of coat-hangers in the tree. That's what passes for a bird's nest in Tokyo.

nest made of coat-hangers

Three good things that happened today:

1. shouted down a pair of crows

2. kept my eyeballs while doing it!

3. observed the miracle of life's majesty etc.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
