Napping on a dead train

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2010.05.09

Today we went to a small city called Ofuna to see a large statue of the goddess Kannon. On the way back, trouble found us.

Our train was stopped due to a fatality. They didn't spell it out, but I have no reason to think that it was our train that hit the person "on the tracks"-there were no emergency crews about and very little commotion.

We waited for well over half an hour. Throughout, Kenny was well behaved (as were all of our inmates) but any hopes that we had that he might nap cane to nothing. In fact, both of us needed a nap during that overheated 45 minutes, and he seemed happy to investigate the car and say hi to everyone aboard. If only the AC had been so energetic!

My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was less competition there.
