movie review - Zombieland

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2010.04.13

When you live in Japan you tend to miss the latest trends in North America. So it was that I didn't know about the zombie and vampire movements in cinema. Hooray!

Since "The Night of the Living Dead", which I enjoyed, I haven't enjoyed many others. "28 Days Later" was good but the zombies were fast, and therefor more ghouls than zombies. This one was a happy and refreshing break.

It features a neurotic young man who has developed a system for staying alive in the zombie apocalypse. This system takes the form of countless rules (rule 1: do your cardio) and it works. But he's completely alone and is suffering.

In quick succession, he meets a cowboy character who's as confident as the lead is not, and he seems to be enjoying this new world. While this isn't actually true, there's little time to dwell on it because they then meet and are robbed by two young sisters.

The zombies are closing in, and the rules may not add up to much in the face of a hoard of countless shuffling hungry corpses.

Recommended.
