awful online shops for tall men's clothing

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Once again, I'm heading for online clothing retail. Last time it was shoes, now it's shoes.

I want to get a lightweight spring jacket for my brother to haul over here when he comes at the end of the month. I can't believe how hard it is to shop online for tall clothes. Just look at these sites. Guys, this is 2010!

George Richards is a store at which I've shopped frequently in Canada. But their website not only lacks actual shopping capabilities, you can't even see the products. Why even have a site at that point?

Mr. Big and Tall. I have a heavier-weight jacket from these guys. My brother bought the identical jacket as it turns out, though we bought them in different places and times. But look at this ridiculous website. It doesn't function on my Mac, and the page can't be scrolled on my netbook. Another win for flash-based web.

I found this so bad that I took the time to write to them about it.

Gilberts Big and Tall is a small regional shop I'd not previously heard of. What a gripping landing page! And once again, there are no products on the site.

Freeds. I have no inkling who these people are, but this is their website's URL: http://69.175.85.147/~freeds/. A spectacular URL for anyone who remembers the 'net in 1995. Once you're there, it's time to play chase-the-navigation bar! Just try to click on something.

An appalling collection. But there's hope!

my solution

I finally went with Big and Tall of London. They had actual products to view and buy, setting them apart nicely (and tragically). They also allowed for e-commerce, the radicals! Moreover, they had something I liked, and they had my size. The entire e-commerce thing was spot on as you would expect from any site you'd actually do business with: clearly marked tax and delivery charges, a place for comments in the purchase process, you name it.

I would hardly consider this worth writing about at this late day and age except .. no one else was even close!

Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
