Bremen town musicians

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2010.03.18

Mari brought home a DVD version of a puppet show telling of "Bremen Town Musicians" the other day.

It's a story I remember well from my own childhood. And though I didn't know the title of the video that Kenny was watching, I began to suspect when I a dejected mule met a down-on-his-luck dog and they began to sing.

It's interesting how the tale has followed my family from country to country. It originates close to my father's area of Germany and I listened to a vinyl version in English in Canada. Now it's a DVD in Japanese for my son.

rand()m quote

Immature poets imitate mature poets steal bad poets deface what they take and good poets make it into something better or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique utterly different than that from which it is torn the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time or alien in language or diverse in interest.
