The Boy yields (for once)

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2010.01.25

I was proud of The Boy this morning. He actually yielded his toys so that we could go to day care.

I decided to use a bit of strategy in getting his toys away from him, and it worked. Rather than simply dressing him and demanding that he leave the toys (or letting him take them with him at the risk of him dropping them from the bike), I told him before I dressed him that he'd have to give up the toys before we went to day care. Reluctantly, he handed over one toy. Then when I had his gloves on, he finally decided that he couldn't even hold the remaining truck (an emergency vehicle of some sort I'm not familiar with) and he handed that over as well.

Our little boy is perhaps starting to realize that there's more to life than constant and immediate gratification.
