movie review - The Bank Job

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2009.12.22

This is a slick telling of an actual bank robbery that occurred in a certain former Imperial capital in Year of Our Lord 1971. I love saying it that way, makes it seem so long ago. You know, the year T-Rex released Electric Warrior.

Anyway, the gang who pull it off were talked into it for the easy money but what they didn't count on was what would happen when they started prizing open strong boxes. Compromising photos, bribery records, that sort of thing. Needless to say, the underworld and the police force go into overdrive and our heroes are under an incredible search. One of them accidentally reminds one of the aggrieved gangsters of his existence during a chance encounter on the street, and suddenly everything starts to unravel.

I liked the realistic feel of the low-tech world of crime in the early '70s and the seat-of-the-pants way that everything was run once upon a time. It feels downright refreshing!

Recommended.
