my old professor

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2009.07.06

One of my University professors was arrested on child pornography charges earlier this year. I asked the University about it because I'd heard was that he'd been fired for possessing the porn on campus. But no, he wasn't fired and it looks like he'll be collecting a comfortable pension on state funding. The old boys' network is alive and well, I suppose.

On the bright side, I suppose Brock University never really had much of a reputation to be tarnished. Here's the response I got from the school.

"Hello Michael,

Your e-mail inquiry about Keith Tinkler was passed along to me for response, as I have some familiarity with the situation.

For the sake of accuracy, he was never sacked or fired.

He was arrested April 22 on child pornography charges, based on material police said was found on his computer at home.

The next day he was released on bail and ordered to not attend the university campus. In accordance with those bail conditions, he was assigned home duties by the university. As term had ended, he had no classes to teach at that point in time.

He remained on salary and benefits until June 30, when he officially retired.

This retirement had already been requested, and approved of, before he was arrested.

I hope this clears up any confusion about Mr Tinkler and Brock's actions after his arrest.

Sincerely,

Kevin Cavanagh

Associate Director, Communications and Public Affairs

Brock University"
