twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2009.07.02

At a celebration today for the demise of our Japanese course, I was asked to make a speech! No one told our class we'd be doing this, I suppose it was a matter of throwing us in the deep end. But I was able to stand up and say several things, it all went well enough (no one booed).

Later I was chatting with various people who I didn't know, and who weren't familiar with 'my style of Japanese' as my wife might put it. Two of them told me "日本語ほんとに上手です."

I should get some kind of gold star on my visa.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.
