'ka' is for cat

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2009.04.07

While I was singing "Old MacDonald had a farm" using the glove toy that my aunt Laurie gave us, Kenny picked up on one of the words. It was 'cat'. I was pronouncing the names for each type of animal, and every time I said 'cat' he'd chime in with 'ka'.

Smart kid. I'm not expecting any miracles with a trailing hard 't' sound, especially from a kid growing up in Japan. But he's doing all right.

My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was less competition there.
