turning Japanese (slowly)

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2009.11.27

I seem to be becoming accustomed to having a Japanese wife. Too accustomed.

I made food tonight and my wife was more shocked than pleased. I guess I've been relying too much on her to do the life-sustaining cooking/cleaning/child-rearing thing. She was commenting on how little help that many of her friends and colleagues get (apparently most Japanese dads don't bathe their kids or get them ready for the day or take them to the day care) and I got the message. Even if it wasn't Mari's intention.

I'm making dinner tonight.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
