the bear!

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Nanaimo, 2008.10.01

We'd gone to the hatchery with the tip that bears came to the place to catch salmon, but Mari and I were away from the car when a bear did in fact turn up. We'd left the windows rolled down because Kenny was asleep in the back seat, and now he (in the car) was between us and the bear.

Racing back to the car, we jumped in and rolled up the windows. The bear sauntered into the woods beside the road, and I figured it would give us a wide berth. Then the branches next to the car began to tremble and I realized that the bear was going to pass right by us. So I did what any protective dad would do.

I rolled down the window, attached the flash to my camera and blasted away as it emerged about three metres from us. I'm looking forward to the pics.

The weather had worsened somewhat again in the evening, and our tour of the semi-suburban streets in my mum's neighbourhood yielded none of the deer we'd expected.
