Tokyo is in tomorrow

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2008.01.23

Today it snowed. The first snow I've seen in the city. In fact, I believe that the last time it snowed was two winters ago, when I was absent (in visa exile). So, I found myself using an underground passageway downtown -- something I rarely do. And there I had one of those Tokyo moments.

Every day in Tokyo, one is reminded that this is a centre of fashion. The things you see people wearing here can be really amazing.

But of course it's also a centre for technology and cultural doo-dads. There's a lot more exploration and experimentation here than anywhere else I've learned.

An example of this was a game I saw a child playing in the concourse of one of the fancy new office towers in the Marunouchi.

There was an image being displayed on the floor by a computer projector on the ceiling. The image consisted of a square area of many colours. Bouncing around inside the square were some colourful balls. The child was running around the square, kicking at the balls. With only a bit of a lag, the balls would change direction as if they'd been physically kicked.

すごく おもしろい 町 ですね!

rand()m quote

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.
