movie review - Casino Royale (2006)

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2008.10.05

They finally made an honest-to-god good James Bond movie. Watching this, I could not believe I was seeing a Bond movie. This was so well made I'd call the plot downright airtight. And the thing that really struck me was that Bond isn't 007 just because he's made his two kills and has his "license to kill". It's at the end that he's Bond, because he's realized that this is the job, this is the frame of mind he needs, and this is what it will take.

I'll also contend that it's that realization that this is who he is that breaks his heart, not the woman he thought loved him. One empathizes. Who knew that James Bond could be a multi-dimensional character. It's only taken us forty years to find out!

Strongly recommended. A favorite!

Selfish leaders increase risk by placing themselves first. It's a fundamental mistake to assume that what is good for us personally is mutually exclusive to what is good for everyone. That kind of zero-sum game is for cowards, and in the end, we all pay the price for this type of latent, toxic leadership.
