movie review - Capote

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2007.10.09

This is the story of Truman Capote, the writer. He penned a "non-fiction novel" about a crime that actually happened. Capote goes through substantial effort to elicit the truth from the incarcerated convict at the heart of the events, an effort that fights against his own sociopathic lack of empathy for those around him. He's depicted as being quite cruel to contemporary Harper Lee, to his lover, and to just about everybody. This includes the death-row convict, who Capote abandons following the success of his book.

The cast is terrific and Phillip Hoffman does an amazing job bringing the abusive, cowardly Capote to life.

Strongly recommended.
