a long day

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Niagara Falls, 2007.09.15

My mum arrived this morning, and after the usual confusion with trying to reach Jonathan, Mari and I sped off to my aunt Laurie's place.

I had found my antiquated laptop in the storage unit on Thursday, and was surprised to see that it still booted. I thought of giving it to Laurie, and even remembered to bring it with us when we got to her place.

She was delighted to have it, as my truly ancient Tandy (my first PC, which I bought in 1989) had packed it in after nearly twenty years of continuous service. At least three stories were written on that thing!

Anyway, we then slowly made our way across the city to Geoff's place, and headed off for Niagara at around 16:00. We stopped in at the farm where I spent the first eight years of my life, and I was discouraged to see that the farmhouse -- and the adjacent cottage where my grandparents had lived -- were gone. Not much to show.

Couldn't get ahold of mum's stepsister Anne for the keys to the hotel room in The Falls, so it was late when I dropped off the others at the hotel and doubled back to St. Kitts to pick up the keys.

Exhausted, we tried to get into the casino in the Falls but Mari didn't have ID. They didn't believe that she was over 30.
