movie review - The Constant Gardener

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2007.05.11

This is a story about one man's quest to find out what really happened to his murdered wife. This pits him, unknowingly, against the pharmaceuticals industry, and good lord those people do not mess about. Peeling back one layer after another, the story builds as the hero unravels, certain of his own death as he keeps digging. Set in various locations around the world (it's in snowy Winnipeg as the credits role) it's an exploration of a brutally exploitative world. I liked the perfectly-maintained tone and the pervasive sense that the hero's crusade is just going to make things worse.

Strongly recommended.
