movie review - Delicatessen

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2007.03.10

I showed Mari this old favorite of mine. It's about a butcher who is a landlord in a run-down society that hasn't so much had an apocalypse but simply stopped dead in its tracks. Packed with ennui (I feel obliged to use $5 French words because the movie is French), the movie deals with the struggles that emerge between the long-time residents and their butcher leader, and an upstart new tenant who refuses to go with the program.

Because the program is cannibalism.

Will the hero and his love-interest, who court clumsily in a time of failure, find their way? I loved the entire thing.

Strongly recommended. A favorite.
