movie review - Oldboy

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2006.02.25

This is an interesting flick about a man who's kidnapped and held in a room for twenty years. Over the years, his only contact with other people is when they come to replace his mattress every couple of years. Then they wheel in a TV, and he's let in on how much he's missed.

Then, quite suddenly, he's allowed to break free.

The purpose of his release eventually becomes apparent, but only after events have proceeded in accordance with the plans of the wealthy individual who arranged the kidnapping in the first place. And after the damage is done, there are choices to be made.

I imagine that this movie will appall a certain number of viewers, but there is a very specific standpoint made in that is unique in my experience at least. The execution wasn't perfect, but this is certainly a tale off the beaten path and one I'd recommend.

Recommended.
