my actress cousin

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2005.09.17

Today for lunch I met with my actress cousin, Kate. She seems to be doing well - in her second year at Ryerson taking whatever it is that actresses take at the University level (it still strikes me as strange that Ryerson is a University, even if it has been something like ten years since they got accreditation). When we met I was struck by her appearance, and told her that she'd "matured and no longer look like a teenager". Then I remembered that she was in fact a teenager.

I've never seen her act, but I know she has all of the peripheral stuff down pat - the upright way of walking, the clear diction (unlike my muddled S. Ontario accent) a certain world view.... It was good to see her. I only have two cousins (other than by marriage) and it really is inexcusable that I've only seen one of them in the past three years, and that I only see the one a 20 minute cycle trip from where I live once a year!

rand()m quote

The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
