the situation in Ukraine

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2004.11.24

I find it interesting that "the West" is so quick to jump into the action in the ongoing Ukrainian situation. When this sort of thing happens in equally large, equally populous parts of the non-European developing world, there isn't this kind of response. I guess it's the white faces that cause all of the interest.

Or maybe I'm being naive. Maybe it's just the Americans attempting to expand their hegemony by pushing for a switch of direction in this large - and formerly soviet - country. This country in which only roughly 200 of its 300 proven oil fields have been developed.

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
