movie review - The Incredibles

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2004.11.12

This is an animated movie from the brilliant folks at Pixar. It's about an aging pair of superheroes, a husband and wife relegated to a drab life in the suburbs following the banishment of superheroes by the government.

Featuring some of the most consistent characters, animation, and dialogue yet seen in a Pixar flick, it's clear that the genre is developing on the right track. It's got a number of the quiet background visual gags that have been turning up in these films since Toy Story's "Virtual Realty", and has a rich array of supporting characters (Wallace Shawn as the miserable boss, and the writer/director as the super-fashion queen Edna). The major voice acting work is excellent (I think Jason Lee was purposefully doing Mark Hammill in his evil genius).

This movie is part action flick, part Bondesque spy-story, and entirely watchable.

Strongly recommended.
