movie review - The Italian Job

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2003.06.04

I downloaded this, thinking I was getting the new version. I like Michael Caine, generally, but I knew I was in trouble as soon as I saw that Benny Hill was in this version.

This movie was just plain bad. It's an action 'caper' with no sense of timing and very little humour. The acting is terrible. The way that the Cooper Mini is shown triumphing over Italian cars at every turn is embarrassing. And it's got this dreadful recurring scene set in a prison that is excruciating. And the ending. Just dumn and dull.

Not recommended.
