a bad cold

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2003.05.06

It stands to reason that as soon as I'm back at work I'd have my first real cold in over a year. All Winter I was in fine shape, but as soon as I'm back on the clock, I need a sick day. I shuffled into the office but had to leave within an hour. I went back home (all the way across the parking lot) and passed out until the middle of the afternoon.

I made the most of it (or the least of it, depending on your point of view) once I was up and around by making the rounds with the phone telling various organizations about my new address. It took over an hour. Over half of that time was waiting on hold with the Aeroplan people.

If there's anything good to say about the Air Canada customer service, it's that they make any other customer service organization (yes, even the government) look stellar. My call to one of the banks, for example, was answered immediately by a human. It was disturbing.

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
