movie review - Twilight of the Golds

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2002.12.30

This is a film starring Jennifer Beals and Brendan Fraser as a sister and brother. The sister becomes pregnant, and agrees to the suggestion by her geneticist husband that she submit the child (via the amniotic fluid in the womb) to a battery of genetic tests for various things.

The test suggests that just like Fraser's uncle-to-be, the child (a boy) will be gay. The film is centred around the reactions of the various parties in the family, and the fallout of their reactions.

It's high drama (Faye Dunaway plays the mother of the siblings, after all), and while my friend Jan had it all figured out within a few minutes, it's well executed and worth a watch if you're in the mood.

Recommended.

Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.
