me and the anarchists

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2002.10.18

Today was an unusual one; I attended an Anarchist film screening. I went with Jonathan Culp (an old, old friend from pre-school to grade 2), his girlfriend and another friend. There was a flick about the guys who've been 'cybersquatting' the gatt.org domain, and what happened when they accepted an invitation to attend a conference as representatives of the WTO. Another flick depicted a guerilla marketing scheme by a small film production outfit that caused a huge pie-throwing-fight at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1969.

Before that, we had dinner at the busy apartment that Jon and his girlfriend share with two others and a large number of drop-in hosts. We had hoe-made pumpkin soup with home-made bread and home-made hummous. I brought wine, which was not home-made.

It's weird, man. People can watch a movie where thousands of people die in a war and not a tear. Yet one collie dies .. and the entire nation collapses with grief.
