taking off my shoes at the airport

It finally happened. They demanded that I take off my shoes for inspection at the airport. Kind of a silly request, when the metal detector failed to pick up my belt buckle or watch, I thought. On the next hop, they didn't even check my largest camera lens. At neither step did they look inside the large zipper compartment on my camera bag. I think it's all for show.
