twenty-seven years and one million words

This is a musical flick by Baz Luhrmann set in Paris in 1900. It's about a young, struggling writer, and the 'courtesan' that he falls in love with. It's mostly set at night, and tells the tale of the struggles for the two of them to find happiness while a) she's dying, b) she's supposed to seduce a local Duke in order to make a real theatre of the bordello where she works, or at the very least get her away from all of it, c) the Duke has other plans - plans that dovetail nicely with those of the bordello owner.

It all ends badly, of course, but along the way we get a bewildering variety of 80's to current pop songs worked into the production. It's also quite funny. I saw Luhrmann's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' while I was in Sydney, and I think the creator must be an interesting fellow.

I don't want to damn this flick with faint praise, but it's definitely worth a download!

Recommended.

rand()m quote

In the wake of 9/11, we [in America] have made the decision as a society that we can never again create something in which we can take pride, for fear that someone will destroy it. Moreover, we must suppress any trace of individualism, lest someone have the desire to rise above the bland sameness that protects us. I have, alas, no idea how to recapture our courage.
