an anthrax scare

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2001.10.19

On my way to the photo lab for some negatives, I was re-routed today by some fireman who had roped off an area about two blocks from my house. Were they:

1. Rescuing a lost kitty

2. Putting out a fire

3. Putting out a lost kitty fire

4. Dealing with an "anthrax scare"

Yes, our heroes were struggling with a scene not unlike the dull movie outbreak, except that there was no monkey (or kitty, lost or otherwise), no Dustin Hoffman, no infectious disease. It was, in short, just another manefestation of our society's sudden panic. It wrapped up while I was making my way around the four-block perimeter that they'd roped off. People (and by this I mean panicking people) are dumb.

It took me fifteen years to discover that I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give up because by that time I was too famous
