sister Juliet

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2001.09.30

Dad, Ken, Heidi, and I went to my step-sister Juliet's place in Pt. Moody today for a visit. It was the first time I'd seen that part of the family since Dad and Renate's wedding, back in '98. Juliet and her husband Gord have three kids and live in a house in one of the modern, properly-designed urban patches where the density is high and there are little clusters of shops within walking distance to everywhere. The Geographer in me was pleased.

Juliet's son (the middle one) recently suffered a fall out of an upstairs window and required extensive surgery and a full body cast to recuperate. He's lost sight in one eye, but has quickly 'bounced back' to the point that he can run around and speak clearly and everything seems fine. It was good seeing them again.

I had the bright idea of bringing the kite, so when we arrived we all headed out to a park and flew the thing. The eldest daughter was the best pilot, naturally, and the boy was the most rambunctious.

The way you write science fiction is: you sit down at your writing machine and you open your mind to the first thought that comes through. My first thought was always a cigarette.
