movie review - Almost Famous

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2001.08.18

This is an excellent flick that I'd been wanting to see since I was in Sydney. It's set in the early 70's, and is about a young (15 year old) writer who wants to be a rock journalist. He hooks up with an up-and-coming band called "Stillwater", and stays with them from a concert in San Diego to a near-fatal plan ride out of New York.

It's simply an outstanding flick. The writing is superb, the direction is flawless, and the entire cast just melts into their characters to the point of disappearing. Unlike so many ensemble pieces where you see actors doing their typical bit, this is a story about people you almost know. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

Strongly recommended.

I like my buddies from west Texas. I liked them when I was young, I liked them when I was middle-age, I liked them before I was president, and I like them during president, and I like them after president.
