twenty-eight years and a million words

Vancouver, 2001.05.26

Woke up with a three-star migraine today. Was after noon before I was up and around. After puttering a bit, I went down to the beach and sprawled out on the sand. I used a bit of driftwood for a pillow, and was woken half an hour later by Ken's cell phone, which I'd taken. We went down to look at bikes. I was stunned by what's around these days.

When I started talking with another customer about one of the bizarre new bikes (it had only one post holding the front wheel, rather than a fork!), he explained some of its features to me. I said, "I guess that's why it costs $3000."

He said, "No shit, eh?". "No shit", an expression I never heard once in Australia. Like I never heard public laughter.

rand()m quote

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
