Ah, Vancouver

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Vancouver, 2001.05.16

I'd forgotten what Vancouver was like. That east end really is something else. I went in to pick up a camping license for our upcoming camping trip to the Kelowna area, and wound up with a new hiking backpack, a metal 'billy' can and bowl, and a pair of gloves. But I didn't know if I'd make it back without getting mugged. If the aged homeless junkies weren't bad enough, the generation of teenage junkies didn't help.

The place is really, really sad. A lot of stores - whole blocks worth - are just boarded up and abandoned, the street being given over to the people that live there.
