movie review - East is East

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Sydney, 2000.06.12

Set in a poor English city, this grey tale depicts a Pakistani-English family trying to cope with the generation gap between immigrant parents (or in this case, the father) and first-generation children. Failed marraiges are arranged, children 'die', and many fun things happen. It's a bit slow, and a good deal more grim than the ads depicted it, but it's worth a look if you're willing to give it some patience.

Recommended.
