movie review - Playing By Heart

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1999.01.23

Four or five stand-alone stories make up this slow-paced flick. The stories follow a number of characters who are all tied together at the end. It's a good film sabotaged by some strangely surreal writing. For instance, why would a youngish twenty-something take up with someone with AIDS? I have a feeling I'll forget this despite the degree of hype with which it was pushed.

Not recommended.

rand()m quote

A civilization is a heritage of beliefs, customs, and knowledge slowly accumulated in the course of centuries, elements difficult at times to justify by logic, but justifying themselves as paths when they lead somewhere, since they open up for man his inner distance.

—Antoine de Saint-Exupery
