movie review - Godzilla

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1999.01.02

Crrrrrrap, and I do mean that in a tired-plot and cliché-overkill kinda way. Godzilla comes to Manhattan to lay 'his' eggs there, 'cos it's 'An island, and totally surrounded by water'. There are scenes where helicopters chase the creature (is he 10 meters tall, or 200?) through a city that seems to consist of hundreds of kilometres of sky scrapers. It's just dumb. It was reasonable eye candy, and the cast was great, but I couldn't overcome the stupidity of the story. Too much stuff happens with little-to-no reason, and eventually that great cast starts to look pained. 10/10 for mayhem, but Godzilla is basically a big T-Rex (I guess because of Jurassic Park) and again: dumb.

Not recommended.

rand()m quote

It's weird, man. People can watch a movie where thousands of people die in a war and not a tear. Yet one collie dies .. and the entire nation collapses with grief.
