movie review - Kissed

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1997.04.19

This is a quintessentially Canadian movie. It's got Canadian actors, a Canadian setting, it's based on a Canadian short story, and the theme is the obsession with death (or kinky sex, which is often how Canadian movies are figuratively expressed). In this case, the kink comes in the form of necrophilia. This is a pretty low key, sensual movie (I couldn't see Hollywood touching this). It boils down to this incredibly crude outline: Girl finds dead things. Girl falls in love with dead things. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl loves dead things. Boy becomes dead thing to be loved by girl.

Not recommended.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
