movie review - Fifth Element

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1997.04.10

Bruce Willis playing His Role as the unwitting action hero, gun in his hand, hurt scowl on his face. Amazing effects, great set and alien design (with the glaring exception of the bad aliens). It's a futuristic sci-fi adventure in which the Ultimate Evil (which remains nicely univestigated) is returning to destroy all life, while the good guys squabble and bungle it. It's all over the place, at times, veering from indulgent fashion stuff to grim sci-fi and visiting a hundred other themes and tones along the way. And yet, it's a ball, and at times beautiful to look at. So; nicely shot, if unevenly directed. I also can think of two scenes which were cut from the previews, but what the hell, Archie, what the hell.

Recommended.
