movie review - Eddie

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 1997.03.01

This was a lousy movie. I have no idea what possessed me to see a movie about professional sports, even in the context of a zany, zany comedy, but I went from hating basketball to hating Whoopi Goldberg. I mean, I'll get over that but not this movie. It starts out poorly, then gets reasonably watchable for most of its length where the lead's obvious intelligence and wit carries it. However, they "Hollywoodize" it through the use of an unbelievably melodramatic and ridiculous "plot development", as if realizing that story has to have conflict, and blow it all. It becomes mind-numbingly, insultingly bad at the end.

Not recommended. If you couldn't tell.

rand()m quote

Selfish leaders increase risk by placing themselves first. It's a fundamental mistake to assume that what is good for us personally is mutually exclusive to what is good for everyone. That kind of zero-sum game is for cowards, and in the end, we all pay the price for this type of latent, toxic leadership.
