One fine Summer day, I joined a tour of sites in Shinagawa city.
My wife works in the HR department of a local life insurance firm. These photos are from the Arakawa cleanup she organized: a volunteer thing where staff came out to help pick up trash. It went very well.
It's Jon's 40th birthday get-together, at Las Meninas in Koenji.
In late February of 2010, Nate Jensen gave a presentation on the frequency of kanji in Japan Post's address database.
A night of entertainment in tokyo, including belly dancing and others.
One night in December, 2007, we ventured into east Tokyo for a street festival.
You know you're far from Canada's dry public places when you're drinking rot-gut in someone's garage watching the locals stagger by.
On November 8, 2009, we rented a private spot in Shibuya to mark Jon's 39th birthday.
In February of 2004, a meter of snow fell on the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. That's about three feet of snow, for those who follow the old Imperial system. It fell in one day.
That was not a day for photography. There was no light, for one thing, and there was absolutely no visibility. To get a sense of what it was like, imagine that the entire sky -- no, the air around you -- is a swarming fluid thing, a dizzying maelstrom of whirling ice crystals. Impossible to photograph.
But these are a few pics from the day after. When the world as I'd always known it reasserted itself.
In 2004 I left Halifax with the intent to move to Toronto. To my astonishment, I was able to get very cheap airfare to Vancouver on the way. So I spent a few lucky days visiting with my family on the west coast.
I finally found steady work in 2003 after about two years of making do with short term work. I promptly took a day off to go see SARStock. It was fun. I brought along a single disposable camera that had been kicking around for a few years.
These are the humble pics I got from that event.
In the spring of 2007 we held a flower viewing festival. And lo, it was good.
The ultimate side trip from Tokyo; taking a visitor to Japan out into the country and relaxing at a tradition-soaked onsen ryokan.
In this case, our visitor was Doctor Zaniewski.
My old friend Kamil (now a tenured professor!) came to Tokyo for a two-week visit. I showed him the city and surrounds.
Our friends Romi and Brian held a barbeque at the start of the season. They even had a professional chef friend preparing the delicious foods.
The last X'mas party the firm would ever hold.
August 26, 2010. The final "Fashion in Japan" get together for 2010.
A joint birthday party for Andrew and Mari!
Our friend Ami is in a dance troupe. Within a year of starting, she's on stage. Not bad for a girl who's simultaneously starting an Economics degree.
In April, we put together a fundraiser for Japan. Here are some images.
We went to Hamilton to see the play \"Far From the Nest\" as part of that city\'s Fringe Festival. My cousin Kate was performing in the piece, which she\'d cowritten. It was quite good.
And naturally I had my camera.
Our 2011 summer trip to Montreal, Ottawa, and around Georgian Bay.
Ken went to the aquarium to take some photos. Emma went to scream at some sharks.
There's a small restaurant in Koenji called "Las Meninas". It's a cozy little place with a proprietor named John who knows what he's doing in the kitchen.
