35mm Photography is a good introductory book to photography with a compact or SLR camera. It's very straightforward, and includes good diagrams and photos as examples. Its clear text, easy-to-read tone, and simple structure make it very useful for beginners.

This is not a book of great depth, and is designed to get you into the field quickly. It teaches how to use your camera, and how to make good photos, and doesn't go much beyond that. I strongly recommend it for those who want a solid but concise introduction to photography. And I also suggest a more in-depth work for those who want a greater understanding of photography.
