Toronto's subway system is a busy but underfunded example of how Toronto has been getting run down by successive waves of bad politics. The city that once showed North America how to do it is sliding ever further into disrepair, choking traffic, and even poverty. But it's still a fine place to visit if you know some locals. If you don't know any locals, don't count on making friends; for some reason Canadian cities are stand-offish, snobby affairs (Calgary notwithstanding).
