Even without the colour, this is an interesting terrain. I suspect that it was created by glaciers depositing the rocks. They would likely have deposited the things at this point because the ice flowed from the land out over the sea. Even with the sea level being significantly lower those days (due to the amount of water tied up in all of that ice) the ice here would have been melting due to the warmer air coming in off the sea.
