Miyazaki, 2009.12.28This was an annual event for my wife's family, for many years - until the pandemic. We'd gather at the end of the year and cook rice that we'd then beat with wooden mallets as shown. The resulting tacky paste would be shaped into balls with something inside like diced daikon or sweet red beans, and then baked. Or perhaps simply eaten as is with a dusting of rice flavor and some soy sauce.
