Mita 1-chome, Tokyo

Canada, 2006.12

These are photos of Mita 1-chome. Specifically, this neighbourhood is part that is being torn down to make way for two more of the sexy modern highrises that dot the region. Some of the buildings in this neighbourhood survived not only the bombings of the Second World War, but the devastating Kanto earthquake in 1923. So, there are a lot of old houses. But in Tokyo, nothing stands in the way of development. I took these photos as a sort of documentary of what, for many years, was a busy neighbourhood with homes and stores (okay, yes, and an office of the fascist former regime, but you take the good with the bad).
