experimental photography

Canada, 2002.02.11

The pace these guys set was really something; that they needed fluids was understandable. I like this shot for the clear way in which the runner is reaching for a drink; I also like the distinction between his blurriness and the volunteer's clear focus: all thanks to the difference in relative motion to my camera. By now, the stream of runners had become pretty steady. Soon, it would become a flood. By the time I left - after running out of film - there were runners lining the entire path, as far back as I could see. As I left, I spotted a woman with a runner's badge on descending from the stairs next to the men's room; the stairs that lead back to the street behind the bathrooms. I didn't actually see whether she was just slipping herself into the race, but it was rather startling.
